Final design for the search input for a search feature on a blog webapp
Annotations.We really wanted a search input that was prioritized accessibility. Annotations helped with handoff to the engineer to keep everything organized and improve communication.
Different States.Designing all the different states for the search dropdown helped us plan for different use cases.
Final Product.We wanted to include the blog post image and title and other relevant information a user might want to search for.
Main takeaways for the project.
ImpactImplementing the search input was a game changer. We have thousands of blogs on the site and it was getting really difficult to sift through all the blogs, authors and posts. Users reported they appreciated the bar and were able to revisit posts.
TakeawaysThe primary focus on this feature was to design for screen readers and family members who use keyboards to navigate through the site. We spent a few days trying to navigate our own desktop by using only a keyboard and screen reader and realized how difficult it can be. Unfortunately, there are many sites that don't implement accessibility standards when building features. Hopefully this can be improved in the future.
